Family, Mount Oliver Community Holds Vigil

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The community gathered in Mount Oliver for a vigil, as questions remain after a deadly police-involved shooting earlier this week that left a canine officer and a 19-year-old man dead.

Justin Jackson was shot and killed Tuesday night along with a six-year veteran police dog.

On Wednesday evening, about 50 people came together at the scene of the shooting along Arlington Avenue.

"When I stood here that night, I saw a soul leave a body. That's what we're about, that's what the church is about," said Rev. Annette Carswell, of Potter's House Cathedral. "I wanted that family to know that we're conscience that their son died right before our eyes and that means something to us."

According to Chief Nate Harper, of Pittsburgh police, Jackson was allegedly firing at police officers, who did not realize the dog had been shot until later.

Investigators add that Jackson had a stolen .357 magnum, which was reported missing after a 2006 burglary in Elliot.

Meanwhile, Jackson's parents say police went too far in shooting their son.

Stay with KDKA for more on this developing story.
