Insurance May Cover Food Lost In Power Outage

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― If you are confused about how long food will keep in your freezer during a power failure – it's 24 to 48 hours. After that, toss it out.

"I'm in the midst of just getting the rest of the stuff out of the freezer and pitching it," Bobbie Lucchino said.

So what do you do in a situation like this?

"The first thing you should do in the event that you've lost power and your food has begun to spoil in your freezer, the first thing you do is take an inventory of what you've lost," Patrick Bain of Howard Hanna Insurance Services said.

Then call your insurance company to file a claim. But what if you have no receipts and you already tossed out the food?

"Then the insurance company will ask you to fill out a form, it's called a proof of loss form which you will just list what has spoiled and what you've thrown out and they will pay you based on what you put on that form."

Remember every policy and every insurance company is different. But if you have homeowner's or renter's insurance, give them a call. You may get back some of what you lost.
