Communities Hit By Violence Hold Peace Vigils

HOMESTEAD (KDKA) ― Peace vigils were planned simultaneously Friday night in Homewood, Homestead and on the North Side by the Workforce Development Global Alliance to send a message of hope.

And in Homestead's Frick Park, family and friends of Broque Adams gathered to hear a message of hope and honor his memory after being gunned down Tuesday and left lying for more than 2 hours in the street in the 1300-block of West Sylvan.

It was held just up the block from where Adams was being laid to rest. The message was so important to the Homestead community that Judy Adams left her son's funeral to also send a message.

"These young people are hopeless, they need hope," Bobby Cyrus, a relative of Adams, said.

Other families -- like Deana Keenan whose son Mark Ferguson, Jr. was also shot and killed in Homestead last month -- listened for hope and prayed for a change in the community.

"I never thought that it would hit my home," Keenan said. "I've been to so many funerals and all I can say is the community is just like speak up, just speak up, that's all I can say. Speak up – we got to stick together."

No arrests have been made in the Broque Adams or Mark Ferguson, Jr. shootings.
