Clinton Plans To Push For Troop Withdrawal

HOPEWELL TWP. (KDKA) ― Senator Hillary Clinton returned to Western Pennsylvania today with less than two weeks left until April 22's primary election.

Clinton was joined by several high-ranking military officials as part of her "Solutions for a Strong Military" campaign at Hopewell High School this morning.

Surrounded by several retired army generals, Clinton focused on the war in Iraq, her plan to strengthen the U.S. military and to pull troops out of Iraq.

"We need to be planning and preparing to start bringing our troops home and I have committed to doing that within 60 days of my becoming president in a responsible, careful manner," said Clinton.

She said she plans to push President Bush for withdrawal before the 2008 general elections.

"I call on President Bush to pledge to the American people, who have sacrificed greatly for this effort, that The United States Congress will have the chance to review and vote on any long-term security agreement he has negotiated with the Iraqis," said Clinton.

Clinton also outlined several ways she'd revamp the services and ranks of the armed forces if elected commander-in-chief.

"I will immediately implement a new one-to-one policy," said Clinton. "For every month our troops are deployed, they will get a month back home with their families. I am setting a goal of ending the practice called stop loss. This is a policy of extending tours and requiring soldiers to remain in active duty for as long as two years or more than they signed up for. I will pass a 21st century GI bill of rights that will help our veterans. It will help our veterans go to college, buy a home and start their own businesses."

Clinton will be in Pittsburgh to deliver the keynote address at the Allegheny County Democratic Committee's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Heinz Field.
