East Liberty Bank Closed After HAZMAT Scare

Although it briefly reopened after a HAZMAT scare earlier today, bank officials have opted to close the PNC Bank in East Liberty for the rest of the day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Although it briefly reopened after a HAZMAT scare earlier today, bank officials have opted to close the PNC Bank in East Liberty for the rest of the day.

HAZMAT crews and firefighters were called to the bank on Penn Circle in East Liberty around noon after an employee opened an envelope with a white powdery substance inside.

Officials now say that the envelope contained such a small amount of powder that they can't determine what it was.  They do however, say that it does not appear to be anything hazardous.

As a precaution, the employee was taken to a UPMC hospital for blood tests.

Though other customers were inside the bank when the incident happened, authorities say the envelope was opened in an office, away from the teller area of the bank.

Police had cordoned off a two-block area around the bank, but they have since reopened the roads.
