Greensburg Diocese: 14 Parishes To Close

GREENSBURG (KDKA) ― The Catholic Diocese of Greensburg announced that more than a dozen parishes are closing.

Bishop Lawrence Brandt said the following parishes will close:

  • All Saints in Arnold
  • St Boniface in Penn
  • St Mary, Our Lady of the Snows in Parker
  • St Bede in Bovard
  • St Mary on Forbes Rd
  • Holy spirit in Fayette City
  • St Timothy in Smithton
  • St Charles Borromeo in Sutersville
  • Forty Martyrs in Tauger
  • St Stanislaus in Calumet
  • Holy Trinity in Connellsville
  • St Vincent de Paul in Leisenring
  • St James in Maxwell
  • St Albert in Palmer

Officials say 26 parishes will be involved in partnerships and mergers.

Brandt says the changes are necessary because of a decreasing number of priests and parishioners across the diocese.

"Change as you know is difficult. It's difficult for each and all of us. People instinctively do not like change, I realize that you and I don't like change," he said. "But sometimes it is necessary to change in order to survive."

Bishop Brandt will also announce changes in priest assignments and mass schedules in the coming weeks. The changes will go into effect October 30.

The Greensburg Diocese covers Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland counties.
