Obama Cabinet Members Visit CCAC In Oakdale

OAKDALE (KDKA) ― The West Hills campus of CCAC had a visit by two members of the Obama administration – Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

Solis and Chu toured the retraining facilities for workers looking to become part of the new green economy, from basic skills in welding to work on hybrid automobiles, to upgrading inefficient furnaces and electrical, heating and air conditioning for an energy efficient future.

Both cabinet members hailed the president's economic recovery plan with the energy secretary handing out stimulus dollars.

"Today I am pleased to announce that more than $11 million for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County alone will create the clean energy jobs that workers here are training for," Chu said.

And the labor secretary said this region may be ahead of others in green job training.

"I think that's a perfect model for us to share with other people that may not be at this point in the country. The other good news is that $500 million is going to be available just for green jobs," Solis said. "So get your pen and pencil ready and let's start expanding the classroom size so more people can get into these programs."

The key to making Pittsburgh the nation's capital in green technology is not just the amount of federal money that's pumped into this region, but job retraining and cooperative arrangements between labor and companies that will lure new companies to the Pittsburgh area.
