Giant Eagle Store Applies For License To Sell Beer

CRAFTON (KDKA) ― A Giant Eagle store under construction in Robinson Township has applied for a license to sell beer.

Some people like the idea of one-stop shopping.

"It's easier, more convenient when you're shopping [than] worrying about the distributors closing early. I think it's a good idea," one shopper told KDKA.

But Don Tomino, owner of the Crafton Beverage Center, thinks it's a bad idea.

"The selection is going to fall off dramatically. These supermarkets and convenience stores are not going to carry the same selections as beer distributors," he said.

"Beer needs to be stored a certain way. It doesn't do well under florescent lighting," he added.

Some shoppers are also opposed to the idea.

"Keep the beer out of the grocery store. I think if people are drinking and they come in and they've already been drinking that's not going to be a pleasant scene," a female shopper said.

A Giant Eagle spokesperson did not want to comment this early in the process, but did say it could be months before the license is approved or denied.

Even if it is granted, they expect to face appeals.
