Falling Light Pole Fatally Strikes Woman

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Allegheny County Medical Examiner has identified a woman killed in a freak accident in East Liberty.

Marquetta Grate, 28, of Homewood, died after a light pole that was struck by a tractor trailer hit her in the head at a bus stop in East Liberty just before 8:30 a.m. at Frankstown Avenue and Paulson Avenue.

Authorities say the pole narrowly missed three children also standing at the bus stop.

According to Guy Costa, of the Pittsburgh Public Works Department, one of his employees witnessed the accident.

He also said the woman was the wife of another one of his employees.

Costa said she had just dropped off her daughter across the street from the accident scene at the Kingsley Community Center for daycare.

The executive director of the community center said a shelter at the bus stop was just removed two weeks ago.

"I come past it every day and it was gone," said Malik Bankston, executive director of the Kingsley Community Center. "I thought they were eliminating the stop, perhaps. But the stop wasn't eliminated. It is still a bus stop."

Grate was taken to UPMC Presbyterian and later died.
