Fort Hood Shooting Leaves Local Families Worried

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood has hit home as several families in the Pittsburgh area have loved ones stationed at the military base in Texas.

The shooting left 13 people dead and 30 others wounded, while suspected gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan – an Army psychiatrist – remains hospitalized after being wounded.

As the investigation continues, many local families were relieved Wednesday to hear good news from Fort Hood.

The relatives of three local families are all reported to be OK after the rampage.

They include the son of Grove City's Ken and Alana Weintraub, the brother of Braddock's Ashley Williams and the brother of Westmoreland County's Alan Harrf.

"You figure, 'Oh he's home, Fort Hood, he's getting out soon. He's safe,' and then something like this happens," Frank Weintraub said. "You don't expect to be on a base – you'd think that'd be a safe place to be."
