Two Flight 93 Advisory Commission Members Resign

SHANKSVILLE (KDKA) ― A second member on a commission that is overseeing construction of the Flight 93 Memorial has resigned.

This comes after a controversial decision by the government that upset landowners near the crash site.

The goal is to turn the makeshift memorial in Shanksville into a permanent one by the 10th anniversary of September 11th.

But in order to do that, the government will have to use eminent domain to acquire the land.

Two members of the Flight 93 Advisory Commission say they can't let that happen on their watch.

Less than a week after the decision was made, Stoney Creek Township Supervisor Greg Walker and Somerset County Commissioner Pam Tokarickes resigned.

In a resignation letter released this week, Tokarickes wrote: "I do not support the Department of Interior's imminent action to condemn the property. Therefore, I feel it would now be impossible for me to continue to serve in this official capacity to construct a permanent memorial to the crew and passengers of Flight 93."

Michael Svonavec owns the land where Flight 93 went down and says he has been willing to sell his land from the beginning. He just wants an independent assessment agency to determine how much it's worth.

There's no word on when the departing commissioners will be replaced or if any other commission members have plans to resign.
