Heroism Of Flight 93 Victims Remembered

SOMERSET (KDKA) ― The courage of the passengers and crew of United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001 was honored on the eve of the anniversary.

Friends and relatives of the crew and passengers gathered for a commemorative service at the Somerset Alliance Church in Somerset.

They paid tribute to the 40 men and women who became soldiers and heroes that September morning.

As the names of the crash victims were read, their photographs were displayed on two large screens on each side of the altar.

"We have to go forward and we got to think positive and try to go forward, just the best we can," Jerry Bingham, father of Mark Bingham, a passenger on the flight. "It'll never be out of our minds, never. That day – it was such a horrific day."

Their heroism won't be forgotten.

"They had some forewarning and they chose to take action," Gordon Felt, president of Families of Flight 93, said. "And it's that citizen soldier, heroism message that we want to get out and memorialize their actions."

There's a temporary memorial at the Somerset County crash site, but family members of Flight 93 victims are looking forward to a permanent national memorial.

"Our plan is to have a dedication ceremony on the major components of the memorial on September 11, 2011," Felt said.
