FEMA To Survey Local Storm Damage

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be in the area today to survey the damage caused by last week's storms.

FEMA representatives are expected to assess the flood-ravaged areas of Turtle Creek and Jeannette to determine whether federal aid will be made available for people and businesses.

Many people are still cleaning up after the major flooding caused by last Wednesday night's heavy downpours.

The downpours led to flash flooding on many local roads, leaving drivers stranded.

Earlier this week, the Salvation Army opened an assistance office at the Turtle Creek Borough Building to provide financial aid, clothing, food and cleaning supplies for flood victims.

Officials estimate that the severe weather damaged hundreds of homes in Turtle Creek alone.

In Westmoreland County, public safety officials declared a state of emergency.

Storms hit the western part of that county particularly hard -- leaving major damage in Jeannette, Hempfield Township, Penn Township and North Huntingdon Township.
