FBI: Special Agent Hicks Made 'Ultimate Sacrifice'

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― When 33-year-old Sam Hicks shouted out that he was a Special Agent with the FBI at the house on Woods Run Road in Indiana Township, he had no idea that he would never again see his wife and child.

"As the head of the Pittsburgh FBI office this is the most tragic information you can relate to any spouse, child, parent or colleague," says Special Agent In Charge Michael Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the Pittsburgh Field Office. "Special Agent Hicks made the ultimate sacrifice that any law enforcement officer makes for his country."

Sam Hicks grew up in Westmoreland County and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown in 1999 with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology.

He was, for a time, a school teacher, and served as a Baltimore Police Officer for three years before joining the FBI in March of 2007 and was assigned to the Pittsburgh office in August of last year.

"The FBI family mourns along side Agent Hick's family, including his wife Brook and his 3-year-old son. We're all grieving this loss and Sam's memory will never be forgotten," Rodriguez added.

FBI Director Robert Mueller III said of the loss: "Our hearts and prayers go out to Sam's family and the members of the Pittsburgh Field Office."

In its 100-year history, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has lost 34 agents as a result of adversarial actions as of September 2001. Sam Hicks will join those honored dead as another "service martyr."
