Several hundred people gathered in downtown Pittsburgh at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture to mark the 20th anniversary of the Extra Mile Foundation.
Among the dignitaries attending the gathering were Bishop David Zubik, of the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese, who talked about how Pittsburgh has addressed the problem of a faith-based quality education through leadership and philanthropy.
During the past two decades, the Extra Mile Foundation has raised more than $45 million for operational subsidies that keep tuition affordable and provide special scholarship support for needy families.
Also on hand at the gathering was Bishop Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington.
"When you think now about all those kids first in the program all those years ago, they are now college graduates, lawyers and doctors working in all kinds of businesses," he said. "I think the joy of this night is knowing all the kids have done well."
There are now about 1,300 Extra Mile alumni.
