Judge Sentences Teen To Life In Deli Clerk's Death

Judge finds 17-year-old Eric Hancock guilty of second-degree murder in death of deli clerk

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The North Carolina teenager charged with homicide in the shooting death of a deli clerk in Mt. Oliver last summer has now been found guilty of second-degree murder by a judge.

Eric Hancock, 17, has been sentenced life in prison in the shooting death of Jamal Mouzaffar.

In the August 2007, Mouzaffar, a native of Syria, was shot and killed in the deli while he was staying locally with family while on medical visa.

During the trial, the judge heard Hancock's taped confession. The teen also took the stand in his own defense on Tuesday.

On the tape, Hancock says he and his cousin planned the robbery of the A & E Deli a week before it happened. But while on the stand, the defendant said he got scared and didn't mean to fire the gun.

Earlier this week, surveillance video from inside the deli on the day of the robbery was played for the judge.

KDKA's Harold Hayes reports that today the judge referred to that video and said this was another avoidable tragedy. He called it a heartless crime and said it is a case of children with ready access to guns, where one usually goes to the morgue and the other to prison.
