Wecht To Take Stand In Civil Rights Trial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The civil rights trial of two state police troopers who are accused in the shooting death of boy from Fayette County continued today.

Opening arguments began on Wednesday in the lawsuit case filed by the father of the 12-year-old victim, Michael Ellerbe.

In 2002, the boy was chased by police as a suspect in a stolen car pursuit on Christmas Eve in Uniontown. A coroner's inquest previously ruled the troopers, Samuel Nassan and Juan Curry, were justified.

But Ellerbe's father claims they used excessive force.

The trial was postponed on Thursday because former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht was scheduled to testify on behalf of the troopers, but couldn't be there because his trial on fraud charges continues.

He is scheduled to take the stand today.
