East End Rape Suspect Takes The Stand

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A man accused of raping women in city neighborhoods took the stand in his own defense.

Keith Wood, of Highland Park, is accused of raping several women 8 years ago, mostly in ground floor apartments in the East End.

While Wood's testimony was incoherent at times, he tearfully told the court he did not rape the women.

"He wanted his day in court.  He wanted to continue to maintain his innocence and tell the jury he was not responsible," Public Defender Lisa Phillips said.

Wood was charged after investigators found DNA evidence that allegedly linked him to four of the five crimes.

In response to this, Wood told the court: "It proved to be my DNA.  I'd be a liar if I said it wasn't."

When asked how he could possibly maintain his innocence with DNA connecting him to the crimes, Wood said:  "The police aren't telling the truth.  There's more to this that my attorney will reveal."

"I don't know to what he was referring," Phillips told reporters.  "I don't know what he was talking about."

On Wednesday, two alleged victims took the stand and described their attacks.

Closing arguments are expected to begin on Monday and then the case will be in the hands of the jury.
