Family Devastated By Donora Boy's Drowning

DONORA (KDKA) ― A 12-year-old boy from Donora died after he drowned in the Monongahela River.

Family members were shocked and grief-stricken when they learned the news.

"The last conversation he had with his grandmother was going to the festival - that's what he was supposed to be doing at the ... festival," Jeff Carlock, the victim's great uncle, said. "And sometimes you know like kids do. They say one thing and they do another."

Terrance Carlock was on the shore and wading in the water with four other children. He decided to go out farther. About 30 yards out, he went under.

"That little boy, I mean, I seen them bring him up on the gurney and like my heart just broke because I have my own kids," says Ray Haney, "but you know my hat goes off to the scuba diver - he was here in a matter of minutes and he, something pulled him straight to that boy."

Rescue crews were hopeful early on because the diver got to Terrance quickly, but he later died at the hospital.

Now Terrance's family is holding on to his memory to pull them through.

"That's when it kicks in - that's when, you know, that unity, you know, when you come together. When something like this happens, you try to be strong for everybody," Carlock said.

A memorial fund has been set up for Carlock at the James Rabe Funeral Home, located at 701 Thompson Avenue, Donora, Pa., 15033. The phone number at the funeral home is 724-379-9020.
