Local Dentist Arraigned, Preliminary Hearing Set

SCOTT TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― An oral surgeon accused in the sexual assault of several female patients turned himself into police this morning and was arraigned at the Scott Township Municipal Building.

Investigators say Dr. Robert Boyda, Jr., is facing several charges including indecent assault, corruption of minors and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse.

Officials say he was released without bond, but had to turn over his passport, schedule an appointment at a behavioral clinic and agree to not perform office procedures without other office personnel in the room.

According to authorities, four female patients claim that the dentist exposed himself and sexually assaulted them while they were under anesthesia.

Police records say Boyda allegedly assaulted the four victims between August of 2006 and as recently as last week.

The dentist's attorney, Bill Difenderfer, says he questions the credibility of the alleged victims saying they were under anesthesia.

"The allegations are bizarre. It's obviously not true. It'll be pretty easy to prove innocence," Difenderfer said.

"He's always with an assistant. There's never any unsupervised procedure," he adds.

Acquaintances of Boyda who spoke off-camera with KDKA say they are stunned by the allegations, and say he is a good guy who is not capable of carrying out a sexual assault.

"He's an outstanding guy. He's got an impeccable record," says Difenderfer. "He's a fantastic dentist and hopefully we'll get through this."

Boyda's preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 24th.

Stay with KDKA for much more on this developing story.
