Archbishop With Local Ties Installed As Cardinal

(KDKA) A Catholic Archbishop, who grew up locally, got a big promotion today as he was installed as a Cardinal in Rome.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo is a native of Steubenville, Ohio, grew up in Castle Shannon and worked here in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In 2006, he was named the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston.

Today, the people who know him locally expressed happiness at the news.

"Everyone loved him," said Chelsey Flaherty, of Wexford. "He confirmed me when I was in ninth grade. We're thrilled to see him going this far."

Cardinal DiNardo became the founding pastor of Sts. John and Paul's Catholic Church in Marshall Township 15 years ago.

As for the honor of being named a Cardinal, DiNardo says he never expected it.

"It's quite an honor" he said. "I'm really, as I say, totally surprised when this one happened.  This was a total surprise to me."

But Cardinal DiNardo's twin sister says she isn't surprised by the honor, and she expects even more out of him.

"I think he's Pope material," says Peg Reismeyer. "Of course, I'm a little bit prejudiced."
