CMU Students Learn To Use Da Vinci Robot

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Some students at Carnegie Mellon University are enrolled in a new class - Surgery For Engineers - and there is a hands-on component of the class – a robot with four arms called the Da Vinci Surgical System.

The class is taught by Dr. James Burgess, a neurosurgeon at Allegheny General Hospital.

Students are able to sit at the control and direct the arms.

Three of them can hold tools such as a scalpel or scissors and the fourth arm holds a camera with two lenses that will give surgeons a 3D image of the medical procedure.

"It is actually being used on a daily basis at Allegheny General. They use this weekly on prostate patients. There is a back log of patients. The outcomes have improved sine the uses of this robot," explains Burgess.

He says there is less blood loss during surgery, quicker discharge from the hospital and better outcomes.
