Jury Deliberations Continue In Wecht Trial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The jury began its deliberations today at the fraud trial of former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht.

After four hours of deliberations, there has not even been a question from jury members yet.

Wecht faces 41 counts in all.

Counts 1- 27 allege wire fraud and mail fraud involving the use of county resources for private gain.

Counts 28-36 allege wire fraud and mail fraud involving how Wecht billed his private clients.

Counts 37-41 allege theft from an organization (Allegheny County) that receives federal funds – the theft alleged is a theft of services.

During closing arguments Monday, the prosecution told the jury it was Wecht's plan and purpose to use county resources to lower the overhead of this private business.

The defense told the jury this case was a miscarriage of justice and that the use of county resources was minimal.
