Jury Selection Begins In Wecht Federal Trial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― Jury selection for the federal trial of former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht isĀ getting underway today.

Dr. Wecht is facing 41 counts including mail fraud and wire fraud. Prosecutors accuse Wecht of using his former county staff to benefit his private practice.

But Dr. Wecht denies all the allegations.

Officials say the trial could last up to 10 weeks and may include as many as 130 government witnesses and thousand of pages of exhibits.

Meanwhile, a federal appeals court says reporters can know the names of jurors before testimony begins in the trial. Several media outlets took the case to court after a ruling that attorneys could only see the list of potential jurors.

Testimony in the trial is set to start later this month on January 28th.
