Scam Targets Credit Union Members In New Castle

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) ― Customers at the First Choice Credit Union in New Castle were targets of a cyber scam.

Someone set up a fake website that looked just like the one for the credit union.

Somehow, they text messaged unsuspecting customers, said there was a problem with their accounts and directed them to the fake website.

That's where they were asked for account information.

"I can't stress it enough. Don't reply to these. They're just scams. There's nothing true about them," Marilyn Wehr, CEO of First Choice Credit Union, said.

Hundreds of customers fell for the scam and gave out confidential information.

After Wehr did her own detective work, she tracked down the scammers to Portugal. The credit union was able to shut down the bogus website, which had a .net domain. The credit union even purchased the bogus website address.

Because the folks at the credit union acted quickly, they were able to deny access to just about all of the accounts where information was given out to the cyber thieves.

One person lost a few hundred dollars from the scam.

The FBI told the credit union there's not much they can do about it since the amount lost was relatively small.

If there's any question about your account, call your financial institution and talk to them directly.
