Pittsburgh Marks Holiday With Traditions, Service

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― All across the region, nation and world, people are celebrating the Christmas holiday today.

Locally, people are being urged to use caution on the roads this morning as they head out to Mass or family gatherings over freezing rain concerns.

But on Christmas Eve, parishioners packed the pews and a band played at the Third Presbyterian Church in Shadyside.

The candlelight service is a Christmas tradition at the church.

And the sounds of the holiday season could be heard inside St. Bede parish in Point Breeze.

That concert is also an annual tradition at the church and it's one that keeps parishioners coming back each and every year.

Today, the annual Community Christmas Dinner will be held once again in Oakmont.

It's open to everyone, runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and is located on Washington Avenue at the Oakmont Elks.

Meanwhile, the local Jewish community has planned a day of service to others.

The United Jewish Federation will hold "Mitzvah Day," as they lend a helping hand at more than 35 agencies and organizations in the area.

The word "Mitzvah" commonly translates to good deed.

The volunteers will give their time to places like the Rainbow Kitchen and Family House.
