Two Penn Hills Children Killed In NY Accident

PENN HILLS (KDKA) ― Two children from the Pittsburgh area were killed in a car accident on Monday.

Their father, Dr. Steven Ambrusko was driving the car Monday evening on Interstate 90 in Chautauqua County New York when it veered off the road and fell down a hillside.

Dr. Ambrusko had just picked up 6-year-old Kate and 4-year-old Pete from their mother Amy in Erie. The two share custody of the children.

Amy lives in Penn Hills.

Police are investigating the incident but believe that Dr. Ambrusko may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Both children were properly buckled in child restraint seats. Police are also investigating whether or not the accident call was properly handled.

Shortly after 5 p.m. a driver contacted OnStar to report the Ambrusko car going off the road. The responding officer could not find the accident.

Dr. Ambrusko regained consciousness around 8:15 p.m. and called for help.

It's believed Peter had a faint pulse at that time and his life may have been saved if he had been reached earlier.

Both the funeral and visitation will be in New York this weekend.

The family is asking that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the children's memorial fund:

Kate and Peter Ambrusko Memorial Fund
829 Milton Street
Pittsburgh, Pa. 15218

Funds will be used to build a playground at The Environmental Charter School at Frick Park where Kate was a first grader and Peter was to be a kindergartener next year.
