Carbon Monoxide Blamed In 12-Year-Old's Death

Five Other Children, 1 Adult Sickened

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (KDKA) ― A 12-year-old girl died and six others were hospitalized after what was supposed to have been a night of fun at a pool party sleep-over.

West Virginia State Police say the cause of it all was carbon monoxide poisoning.

It happened at a house in suburban Morgantown, W. Va., where the children, ages 12 to 15, and an adult were overcome by fumes.

Some needed a hyperbaric chamber to deliver extra oxygen to the body.

Investigators determined it was a faulty heater for an indoor pool that caused the carbon monoxide to fill the house.

Dr. Ed Krenzelok from Children's Hospital's Pittsburgh Poison Center says accidents like these happen year round.

Experts say regularly check appliances that can generate carbon monoxide and call for medical help at the first sign of dizziness.

No information has been released about the condition of the victims.
