Group Faces Another Battle For Bushy Run

JEANNETTE (KDKA) ― Bushy Run Battlefield was the site of an important British victory during Pontiac's war, but a new battle is being fought.

It's over the money used to run the site and who's going to control it.

State budget cuts threatened to close Bushy Run in Westmoreland County.

Jean Loughry, president of the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society, organized a volunteer effort to keep it open.

With that effort, the visitors' center has thrived. In a typical summer, Bushy Run Battlefield sees around 3,000 visitors, but this year it was closer to 5,000.

Loughry is now working with the state so the heritage society can continue to control the battlefield in the future.

"We're trying to get the money in our name and be able to do with the money what we want and not go through the state with every penny we want to spend," she said.

The sticking point is how long the heritage society would have control of the battlefield's finances.

They want a five-year contract. The state wants to work on a year to year basis.

"Well, the state is working on a contract through their attorneys and we hope it words the way we want it," Loughry said.
