Pittsburgh School Police Chief Robert Fadzen praised the driver of an A-1 Transit Co. van that crashed into a tree on a steep hill in the city's Brookline neighborhood earlier today.
If the van had gone further down Dunster Avenue, it could have crashed into a house, he said.
There were two special needs students on the van, along with a female aide. They had just been picked up at the Pioneer Education Center and were on their way home. The aide suffered leg, neck, and spine injuries. She was hospitalized in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the driver of the van told both police and a rescuer that she kept trying to put her foot on the brake, but the van wouldn't stop. She said she complained about brake problems earlier in the day but company mechanics checked them out and said they OK.
A-1 Transit released a statement which said in part that the van involved in the crash was driven by staff members, and another driver yesterday and no reports of faulty equipment were reported.
The company said the safety of children, passengers and their drivers was their number one priority.
