The suspicion of explosives caused police to shut down part of Eisner Avenue in Bridgeville.
Police say 42-year-old James Shadish allegedly shoved his mother and assaulted his brother after the family had an argument over getting medicine for a family member.
Shadish took off before police arrived. Police say they found a sawed-off shotgun and suspicious materials that made them think there might be explosives inside.
The bomb squad was called to the scene. They went inside and checked it out, but it turns out nothing was explosive.
"We believe one may have been iodine," Bridgeville Police officer Chad King said. "Once again, I'm not a bomb technician I couldn't identify the devices that's why they were called in."
King says some of the items were wrapped totally in tape, but the bomb squad found no explosives.
Police used Shadish's cell phone to track him. They found him at the Galleria shopping center in Mount Lebanon where they arrested him.
He was armed with a handgun. Shadish is facing simple assault and firearms charges.
