Police in Westmoreland County are trying to find out who stole thousands of aluminum cans collected by Boy Scouts from church property.
Boy Scout Troop 230 from Harrison City took a different approach to fundraising by collecting aluminum cans and recycling them. They hoped to raise about $2,000 to be used in part to help pay for the boys' summer camp.
The scouts started collecting the cans about six months ago. Officials say the thieves made two trips to the back of the First United Church of Christ parking lot to haul off as many cans as they could.
In a few weeks, the scouts thought they'd be enjoying the fruits of their labor, but now they're not so sure.
The scouts planned to redeem the cans in about a week. Penn Township Police are handling the investigation.
