Some Blawnox High-Rise Residents Return Home

BLAWNOX (KDKA) ― Some of the people who live in a Blawnox high-rise damaged by fire were allowed to return.

"I'll feel better when I get up on the seventh floor – believe me," Lillian Terkay said. "I don't want to leave tomorrow – I won't leave at all."

For some of the residents, it was the second time in three years they've been forced out because of a fire.

"I had to be out of here about five days before I could come back in after the first time," Tom Cepek said. "This is overnight and I can come back tonight and I'm really glad I can come back this evening."

It's been a long day for the nearly 90 evacuated residents.

The fire started in a fifth-floor apartment before dawn. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the fire may be smoking related.

Officials say it's too early to say for certain.

"I hope that they ban cigarettes from the high-rise completely and I hope that everyone gets back safely," Nancy Fisher said.

Two people were hurt in the fire, including a woman who suffered burns on 20 percent of her body.

She was last listed in serious but stable condition at West Penn Hospital.

The fire caused about $1.5 million in damages.
