Pittsburghers React To Bernie Madoff's Sentencing

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Former billionaire investor Bernie Madoff will spend the rest of his life in prison.

At his sentencing, he told the judge he is "tormented" by what he's done, but his comments drew no mercy from the judge who described his crime as "extraordinarily evil … a bloodless crime … that takes a staggering toll."

Applause broke out in the crowded Manhattan courtroom after the judge issued the maximum sentence of 150 years in prison.

On the streets of Pittsburgh, reaction to the punishment was mixed.

"He's not going to live that long and I don't see him being ... I mean, they might want to put on an example for the rest of the people who might think of what he did," says Wesley McKenith from Mt. Oliver. "But I don't think he did enough for a hundred and some years."

"I don't think he should be out of jail but 150 years seems extreme," added Gwen Davis from Homewood.

But that opinion was far outweighed by others who believe the sentence was just.

For the average Pittsburgher, anger towards Bernie Madoff is based in the heartbreak he wrought.

"He hurt a lot of people for a long time. And it's going to keep going on - there's a lot of people that [they are going to] continue to find that he hurt," Doug Toth, from Mt. Lebanon, said.

"I think it's well deserved, I mean based on what I've heard and the number of people that he's affected in their lives. So I think it's a fair punishment," Jenna Barber, of Fox Chapel, said.
