The attorney representing Ben Roethlisberger spoke exclusively to KDKA's Paul Martino outside his office in Atlanta today, predicting that the Steelers quarterback will emerge from recent sexual assault allegations with both his freedom and his future intact.
Police in Milledgeville, Georgia have been investigating the alleged assault since Friday, when a 20-year-old college student accused Roethlisberger of assaulting her at a nightclub.
Yesterday Georgia authorities said they expected to interview Roethlisberger within two to three days; but famed defense attorney Ed Garland told KDKA that has yet to be determined.
"They are going to attempt to interview everyone and in the due course that would be one of the things under consideration," Garland added, "But I'm not saying whether they will be or when they will be."
Garland has built a reputation for defending professional athletes and celebrities.
Besides the glare of the media, he says cases like the one against Roethlisberger bring a lot of problems with them.
"Witnesses come out of the woodwork especially a case where apparently hundreds of partygoers, bar attendants," he said. "Some people come forward because they want to be in the limelight, they want to be in front of this camera."
Garland refuses to discuss the specifics of the alleged sexual assault. He says there's a lot to do before he'll talk about it.
"There's no criminal charge pending and it is the kind of thing that lawyers need to stop and reflect about, law enforcement need to stop and reflect about and that's what's going on," Garland told KDKA-TV.
Meanwhile, Garland predicts that Roethlisberger will emerge from these accusations unscathed.
"We intend to finish this case in a way that neither his liberty nor his future is damaged," Garland said.
As for representing a superstar like Roethlisberger, Garland says they make good clients.
"I have found that successful athletes are intelligent, they're hard-working and they take seriously any matters such as this," he said.
The famed attorney won't say if Roethlisberger is in Atlanta or coming to Atlanta any time soon and he refuses to talk about the alleged victim in this case.
There's no word about the DNA samples authorities say they are seeking from Roethlisberger.
