Student Dead, Others Rescued In Bellevue Fire

BELLEVUE (KDKA) ― Officials are investigating after a local student died and several other residents had to be rescued during an overnight fire at an apartment building in Bellevue.

The flames sparked around 2:30 a.m. at the four-story Bellevue Mansions on Jefferson Avenue.

The victim has not been identified, but officials say he was 22-years-old and a student at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute.

Officials with the Bellevue Fire Department report that as many as 100 residents were evacuated. Also, firefighters had to do numerous physical rescues as some residents were trapped.

"This could've been a catastrophe without the efforts of all these men and woman that were trained here," said Bellevue Fire Chief Glenn Pritchard.

About 10 different fire agencies responded to a fire.

Authorities say several residents suffered from smoke inhalation.

Dozens were left homeless by the flames.

Meanwhile, the cause remains under investigation.
