After spending nearly five years in prison, former Steelers running back Byron "Bam" Morris says he's living a new life -- staying clean and in shape; now he's hoping to make a comeback.
Morris was a rising star in the NFL; but the choices he made off the field forced him to trade in his black and gold for a prison orange uniform.
He was the leading rusher in Super Bowl XXX, but it all came crashing down. "I had all my things in order," Morris tells KDKA, "but they was the wrong order..."
"I ain't never seen this type of money," Morris adds, "and then when I had it, I just lost my mind. I really did. Everything that goes with it, the fame and everything, it got to me and I thought I was 60-feet high... It sucks you up"
"At that young age, I just lost myself when I got all that money and I felt like I had a bulletproof on. I could do anything I wanted to and if I got in trouble, somebody was going to bail me out."
Morris says coaches and players tried to reach out to him, but their words fell on deaf ears.
He got busted with four pounds of marijuana in his truck, was arrested three times for drug possession and distribution. He also violated parole and went to prison for four and a half years.
"Football was probably at the bottom of the list. That wasn't important to me..."
"I was too stubborn and too stupid to see what I had in front of me."
Now after nearly five years of being drug and alcohol free, Bam Morris is hoping for one more chance to play in the NFL.
He's petitioned the league to reinstate him and he says he's working hard to make it happen.
"I run every day, I jog, life weights -- things that Bam Morris has never done, I'm doing at the age of 33 and I'm having fun with it."
