Mother Jailed For Allegedly Poisoning Infant

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh Police say a woman from Tennessee tried to kill her 4-month-old son at Children's Hospital by giving him excessive levels of table salt.

Amber Brewington, 21, allegedly injected Noah King with salt water solution - not just in Pittsburgh but also in Tennessee.

"The child was being treated for high sodium levels in his body and it was suggested they bring their child to Children's Hospital for further treatment," Pittsburgh Police Commander Thomas Stangrecki said.

Noah was transferred to Pittsburgh July 9. Doctors at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville hoped the move would improve his condition.

A spokesperson at the medical center tells KDKA's Brenda Waters Noah had been there for a month.

Investigators say Noah traveled to Pittsburgh with his father and his condition had improved, but when the baby's mother arrived four days later, things took a turn for the worst.

"An investigation was conducted which revealed that on July 13, the mother did tamper with the feeding tube and was able to deliver salt water to her child which put him in critical condition," Stangrecki said.

When Brewington was arrested, police say she had a backpack with a cannister of salt, Pedialyte and a syringe inside of it.

According to a criminal complaint, Brewington says that although a syringe was found inside her backpack, she was not intending to give her son another injection of salt water.

She does admit to having done it in Tennessee, claiming her son suffered severe seizures which could result in brain damage. Brewington said in the complaint that she did not want to see Noah suffer and wanted to speed up his death.

Police say Noah's father is not a suspect. According to the grandmother, her son and Brewington have two other children together and they are healthy.

"We're all in shock - I can't believe she did it," Noah's grandmother said.

"I don't want to believe she did it. I don't want to think she deliberately gave this baby salt water. Or did somebody tell her that salt water's going to make him better? Is that why she done it? I don't know why she done it."

Brewington is in the Allegheny County Jail.
