Avalon Apt. Building Residents Given All Clear

AVALON (KDKA) ― There were scary moments for the residents of an apartment building in Avalon today.

What was initially thought to have been a toxic chemical turned out to be just a very strong odor from the sewer line at the building on South Birmingham Avenue.

The smell forced firefights to wear their full gear.

Everyone inside the 18-unit apartment building was evacuated.

Fire officials say the odor smelled like a body putty used at an auto body shop but there's nothing to be alarmed about.

Earlier in the day there was a concern that hydrogen cyanide was present but it was a false reading.

Residents got the all clear to go home around 1 p.m.

Hazmat crews said if and when the odor does come back, residents should ventilate their homes by opening the doors and the windows.

Some business owners on nearby California Avenue also smelled that odor this morning.
