Woman To Stand Trial In Pregnant Teen's Death

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Wilkinsburg woman accused of cutting an unborn baby his mother's womb has been order to stand trial.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 39, of Wilkinsburg is accused of cutting the baby from a pregnant teenager's belly and killing her. Detectives testified that the women likely met visiting inmates at the Allegheny County Jail.

A city magistrate found that there was enough evidence to send Curry-Demus to trial for the murder of 18-year-old Kia Johnson, and the kidnapping of her baby.

After the preliminary hearing, Deputy District Attorney Mark Tranquilli said, "Kia, for whatever reason was lured back to the apartment of Curry-Demus, was there incapacitated and basically her baby was harvested."

On July 16th, Curry-Demus took the baby to West Penn Hospital where it was determined that the child was not hers. Her sister, Brook Curry, testified that Andrea called her asking her to clean up her bathroom and to mislead police, showing them a different apartment.

It took two more days for police to find Curry's Demus' apartment where the decomposing body of Kia Johnson was found in a bedroom wrapped in a comforter, plastic and secured with duct tape.

Kia's mother had to leave the courtroom several times, collapsing and in tears, after listening to testimony.

Curry-Demus, who had served time previously for stealing another baby from a hospital a number of years ago, had a history of depression after a miscarriage but was found to be mentally competent to stand trial at a previous hearing. Her attorney Angela Carsia disagrees, and says she is not capable of assisting in her defense.

Kia Johnson's baby is now with her mother's family. Her dad, Eric Johnson, told reporters they are still mourning Kia but, "I got my grandbaby, I praise God for that."
