Surveillance Tape Links Murder Suspect, Victim

Surveillance video from the jail showed murder suspect, Andrea Curry-Demus, talking with Kia Johnson on Tuesday -- shortly before her disappearance

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police say a Wilkinsburg woman who's accused of killing a pregnant teenager and cutting the baby from her womb claimed she first met the victim at her apartment; but officials say surveillance video from the Allegheny County Jail suggests otherwise.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail for kidnapping and killing of Kia Johnson, 18, of McKeesport.

Detectives found Johnson's body inside Curry-Demus' apartment. Her hands and feet had been bound with duct-tape and she had a wound to her abdomen consistent with the removal of a baby.

According to the criminal complaint, police say the defendant told them she met Johnson when two other people brought the teenager to her Wilkinsburg apartment; but investigators believe the women actually met at the jail where both women were visiting inmates.

In the affidavit of probable cause, police said surveillance video taken from the jail shows Curry-Demus having a conversation with Johnson – shortly before Johnson was reported missing.

Police talked about the jailhouse meeting at a news conference yesterday. "We have information that they were there at the same time, visiting people at the Allegheny County Jail," Allegheny County Superintendent Charles Moffatt told reporters.

Just a day after Johnson disappeared, Curry-Demus showed up at a Pittsburgh hospital with a baby that she claimed was her own; but suspicious hospital workers contacted police.

After questioning, detectives say Curry-Demus admitted that the newborn was not her own – claiming that she bought the baby for $1,000.

Officials charged Curry-Demus with murder after discovering Johnson's body.
