Local Veteran Expected At Hearing For Flag Flap

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― A local veteran who got into trouble for displaying American flags in her yard at her condominium is expected to attend a hearing this morning.

In July, Denise James, of Robinson Township, was facing a lawsuit over the small flags displayed in the garden area outside of her condo.

"Because this is called a common area and you're not allowed to have anything in the common area according to the rules and regulations," she told KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson in July.

In May, she was notified by the condo association that she was violating the rules and told to take down the flags. She didn't take them down.

James then received a letter from an attorney telling her that she had three business days to contact the condo management company. James said she tried.

"She apparently didn't have time to talk to me and then that time they did file for a lawsuit," James said.

Other neighbors flew their American flags legally because they were attached to their condos. A 2005 state law protects that.

"I'm not against having it up there, but this is something that shows a little more pizazz I think," James said at the time.

James has spent 25 years in the Air Force and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard.
