A member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard has won the right to display the American flag in the front yard of her condo in Robinson Township.
Sgt. Denise James had been threatened with a lawsuit and fines by her condominium association since last July.
The sergeant was not in uniform when she showed up for a magistrate's hearing, but she was surrounded by some of her fellow condo owners who were all waving the red, white and blue.
One of them, Steve Vasko, said: "If this is what it comes down to, a veteran cannot put her flags out, we have problems in America, we have big problems."
Sgt. James who was raised in a military family has been displaying a number of 4-by-6-inch flags in the small garden outside her home. The condo association considered that a common area and said that it was against the rules.
Before the hearing could get underway the case was settled.
"We resolved it by negotiating it and working it out," said James' attorney Larry Mannypenny. "My client will be able to have her flags."
An attorney for the condo association, Wayne Chiurazzi, said it was never about the flag, "It was blown out of proportion. We settled the case. We're happy it's settled."
The sergeant, has agreed to remove a little airman figure which might be considered more of a decoration, but the 25-year veteran is thrilled with the outcome.
"Oh this is a great victory for me," she daid, "At least to get to keep my flags, and no fines is the important thing.
