Two Adah Volunteer Fire Trucks Involved In Crashes
ADAH (KDKA) ―
The chief of the Adah Volunteer Fire Department in Fayette County says in his 30 years with the company, he never saw one of his trucks involved in a wreck.
But, earlier this week, two were involved in accidents in the very same day.
The first accident happened early Sunday morning when the department was responding to a fire at a former personal care home on Sunshine Hollow Road in German Township.
The truck was broadsided by a driver who was suspected of driving under the influence causing serious damage to the truck and keeping it from reaching the scene of the fire.
The second accident happened when the department was responding to a house fire on Messmore Road and the rear of the truck was hit by a car in an intersection.
Today, one of those trucks remains out of service. The other is damaged but usable.
The assistant chief of the Adah department says insurance adjusters have not yet been to the station, but he estimates the damage at more than $20,000.
He says his department is now operating at just half capacity and is relying on the McClellandtown department, which is more than 10 miles away, for backup.
Pennsylvania State police in Uniontown say drivers are required by law to yield to emergency vehicles if they have their lights and sirens turned on.
The McClellandtown chief says you should always treat an emergency vehicle as if it's headed to your own home because you never know when it will be.
The Adah fire chief says the department was already planning to replace the more badly damaged truck in September.
But, he says the department may now be without a second truck until that time.
