PennDOT Launches New Traffic Information Tool

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Just in time for Labor Day weekend, PennDOT has launched a new travel tool.

The new phone service is designed to keep travelers informed about highway conditions and accidents.

All you do is dial 511 to get weather, tourism or traffic information.

The number was designated by federal authorities as the nationwide three-digit number for traveler information.

But PennDOT is discouraging travelers from calling while they are actually behind the wheel of their vehicle.

"We do encourage motorists to pull over just as they would for any phone call - as a safety measure - but it is a voice-activated system," said PennDOT's Dan Cessna. "So, if you're calling from a hands-free phone, it shouldn't be too much of a distraction for motorists."

But like most voice-activated systems, there can be trouble.

"If he's saying, 'I don't hear you' - it may mean he doesn't recognize your words," said Cessna. "So make sure that you try to use the right words - its takes a little bit of time you need to be patient."

Pennsylvania is joining 35 other states in offering the service.
