Sheriff's Program Saves Homes From Foreclosure

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A new program in Allegheny County, crafted by the sheriff's office, is giving people facing foreclosure their last best chance to keep their homes.

Sheriff sales can be delayed in favor of so-called conciliation conferences.

On Tuesday, the Barker family was one of about a dozen families to appear before Judge Michael McCarthy in an attempt to work out a deal with their lender.

They were represented by lawyer Dawn Williams, from the Urban League, for free.

They were able to strike a new agreement with a lower interest rate and an extended loan which allows them to keep their house.

To Williams, the message to people facing foreclosure should be clear.

"Come in. We can help you. We're able to assist you. Don't give up, because it might not be too late," she said.
