Pittsburgh Police Prepared For Penguins' Game 7
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
After the Steelers Super Bowl XLIII win, some in Oakland took things way too far -- as some acts of destruction caught on tape can attest.
But, regardless of whether the Penguins win or lose Friday night -- police are sending out a message.
"Well, the message is to come out and celebrate safely and not to cause any property damage and certainly lesson learned from last time that property damage will not be tolerated," said Cmdr. Kathy Schneider of the Pitt Police Department.
But a repeat of the Super Bowl riot isn't expected.
For one, it's summer and only 500 Pitt students are now living on campus.
For another, several students were arrested, suspended and expelled last time and that wasn't lost on students like Scott Anderson.
"I watched some people get taken out, tackled by police. That really deterred me from any riotous activities," he said.
At Hemingway's, they're looking forward to a more civil evening. A full bar, yes -- but no violence or destruction.
Says barmaid Kenzie Rodriguez: "I'm hoping that the Pens win. We have a big crowd in Oakland and everybody celebrates calm and cool and celebrates safely -- without burning things."
Throughout the city, extra police will be deployed to neighborhoods like the South Side and are prepared to close down streets if necessary to allow for a safe celebration --- but in addition more firefighters will be on the ready to put out fires.
"We had adequate number of fire resources on duties but we couldn't get them into the areas because of the crowds," said Michael Huss, the city's director of public safety. "So, we're teaming up firefighters with police and having more of those resources available where we had problems in the past."
