Pittsburgh Firefighter In Rehab, Awaiting Charges

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A Pittsburgh fireman who is accused of sending fellow firefighters on bogus calls so he could steal money from them is now in rehab awaiting criminal charges.

Late last week, authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of Vincent Manzella, 31, on charges including burglary, theft and false alarms involving an agency of public safety.

According the criminal complaint, Manzella admitted to making several 911 calls from pay phones in April so he could get into the empty firehouse.

When the other firefighters returned from those bogus calls, the complaint added, they noticed that "small amounts of money would be missing from pants pockets and the kitchen area."

Manzella told police "he was really bad into heroin at that time, and that his life had fallen apart," according to the complaint.

Union leader Joe King confirmed today that he confronted Manzella at work and ordered him into a rehabilitation facility.

Once Manzella is released from rehab, he will face criminal charges.

Public Safety Director Mike Huss says he would like to see random drug testing on all city firefighters.
