Tarentum Man Close To Saving Property

TARENTUM (KDKA) ― A Tarentum man who lost his granddaughter and home to a fire in January has new hope that he will be able to preserve the land where his former home stood and make it a memorial.

Banks were ready to foreclose on Doyle Calhoun's home a month ago unless he paid off his mortgage along with nearly $30,000 in fees.

A Florida company called Ocwen Loan Servicing has agreed to write off all fees and extra charges and agreed to allow Calhoun to pay off the note using insurance money from the fire.

The company's vice president told KDKA's Marty Griffin that the company has worked with more than 90,000 families to avoid foreclosure.

Paul Coches with Ocwen told Griffin the Calhoun case broke his heart and took personal interest in getting it resolved.

Doyle Calhoun is expected to formally sign off on the deal Thursday.

"You hear the horror stories and you see the bailout money going to these corporations and glad to see it's actually expressed an interest in the average person, a common man like Doyle Calhoun," Larry Willis, Calhoun's attorney, said.

After a lot of cleanup, the destruction that was on Calhoun's land is gone and now fresh grass has been planted and there is a small cross in the middle of the lot.

There may be angels soon and perhaps a fountain, but there will never be another home built there – it will always be the Calhoun place.
