Borough Shuts Off Water For Delinquent Customers

CARNEGIE BOROUGH (KDKA) ― Leaders in Carnegie Borough are taking what some are calling drastic action against the people who live there.

Officials say about one in 10 people have not paid their water bills and owe the borough hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"We thought the borough was being stupid and thought it was pathetic for them to actually do it," Sierra Connelly said. Her water was shut off Wednesday.

Borough Manager Whitney Brady says about 300 people owe more than $300,000 in back sewage bills.

She says the highest bill is $7,000.

Brady says she has been threatened.

"I have to laugh about it because it's all you can do," she said. "I mean I realize I'm protected, I'm not scared."

Most residents aren't angry and admit they owe the money, but say they had a hard time getting the money together to pay the bill and the borough didn't work that hard to collect in the past.

The borough says 20 residents were cut off Wednesday and will vigorously shut off hundreds more starting November 2.

The borough suggests people who can't pay approach them before their service is shut off because they do have a type of payment plan.
